Defense Department Investigation Finds Defense Secretary Put Military Personnel in Danger with Messaging App Chat.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense report has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by sharing classified intelligence in a private Signal group, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The chat group in dispute contained details about a planned airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This chat was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the group reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Serious Threat to Troops

The internal investigation found that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

Notably, the document acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the information he shared, though it was unclear whether he formally exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Response

The source indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed details that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He added that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been provided to Congress. An unclassified version is expected to be released in the coming days.
