No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
