Each time a prominent prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category in 2014
- A different innovative game missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
